THE ALGERINES ASSOCIATION

[CHELMSFORD FLOTILLA]. Founder JACK WILLIAMS – “SPANKER”.

The Algerines Association was founded in 1984 for those who served in ships of the ALGERINES Class, the most efficient of all the wartime British Fleet Sweepers.

They were built between 1942 and 1945, armed with a 4 inch gun, 4 double Oerliken Cannon and Depth Charges and were generally designed to cope with the varied demands of magnetic, contact and acoustic mine sweeping. They were, however, frequently used as Escort vessels. Of the 110 ships built, 48 were built in British Yards and 62 in Canada.

The Algerines meet here on the 2nd Tuesday of the month.
